You are right that creating a new package is a bad solution. But honestly, breaking BC in IT in order to fix some long-standing bugs sounds like a good solution for me. Actually I have the impression that the situation concerning IT is a bit peculiar at the moment and it really seems to be in the need of some bugfixes. > There will be no other way to go.
