To me a fork implies two versions being developed. Since IT hasn't been
updated in many, many months, and is essentially frozen, IMO it's not really
a fork, it's a new version.
Alexey's version addresses IT's *undocumented* quirks and is far more
intuitive to the new IT user, which is of much greater import now that PEAR
has gone public. Just look at how often the {$1} behavior shows up in the
bug tracker! With PEAR public, IT has the potential to have many more new
users than there are old users.
For those who are old hands with IT, and are using it in deployed
applications (myself included) it provides a means of maintaining backward
compatibility by simply flipping a few switches, if I choose to upgrade. If
I redeploy old apps elsewhere I still have the option to install the 1.x
version and for new development I can use the new features of Alexey's
version. Sounds like the kind of choice I like as a developer.
So, as an IT user, I'm +1 for Alexey's version as HTML_Template_IT[X] 2.0
