Channels support is one thing apart. It allows to have multiple
installations locally as well as using the same tools to manage
packages from different projects.
The plans for the installer is to make it more flexible and less
PEAR only oriented. That means, for instance, to do force non PEAR
repository/server to use PEAR rules but defined them.
However, for now it is already (I do it dayly) to use the pear APIs
or command to run your own repository.
PEAR base concepts will not be flexible enough for many people. It
does not make sense to take every single php project under the pear
umbrella. In this manner, having many 'pear compatible' repository
makes sense.
