Right, let's cancel all the pre Pepr packages... As far as I know QA removal actions from the directory some old packages where the lead had no intention to continue/no release/orphaned the package and no one was sufficiently interested to take over. From this to go like merging packages which are now part of PEAR (doesn't matter under which rules they where grandfathered, these are PEAR packages now) without the formal consent of the relevant leads it's unfair. Under this idea there should be no Template engine on PEAR as there is already Smarty which is an official php.net project.Thats the rule we apply to anything new. IE a double standard.
I'm just saying anyone who pretends it doesn't exist is sticking there head in the sand. And removing everything is a Strawman, there are better solutions. You are entirely free to scan the bug database, find the packages which might become zombie or are already frozen, email the lead or ask for merges or evenpropose to take over emailing QA or/and the relevant leads. You might also propose the removal of certain packages from the listing. This would be the correct way to proceed. Regards David Costa
