Ok. as to performance, I gota address this. IIOP sends things (I think) as
binary across the line. SOAP sends them as XML (strings of uncompressed
text), so I would think that SOAP would be slower then CORBA.

Thats what scares me. A protocol that you can NOT stop from going over a
firewall. Does that scare the crap out of anyone else? Why do you think MS
is pushing such a protocol so hard?

It will only be widely used if we as developers support it.
