Hi,
Just my opinions on this thread...
- SOAP is definately slower than any other method e g EJB and Corba. But
speed is becoming a less problem as we continue to grow older...
- SOAP is much more flexible than EJB and Corba. What do you want to work
with text or binary data? I go for text... and it's simple to. With EJB I
must have Java, with Corba a ORB... that's why I gave that up. And btw,
there is COM... but it only works in Bill's world.
- There is support for firewalls in SOAP that can deny/accept requests. Read
the FAQ.
- Why MS support it? Well, imagine a world where Unix, AS/400 and Windows
talk nice and simple with eachother... there is your answer.
- Will SOAP be successful? Well, what are the most common used ORB in the
world? Apache and IIS last time I checked...
For the interested check out http://www.develop.com/soap/
and since SOAP is
pretty similar to XMLRPC check out http://www.xmlrpc.org/ as
well where
there is a PHP version available. That might be a good start for SOAP
adaption of PHP.
