Let me tell you, my 30 year old operating system runs until 1) either the electricity turns off or
2) I decide to upgrade the kernel.
I would be no where near as efficient if I had to squiggle my damn mouse around all day. Not to
mention, restart my OS.
There is nothing nearly as strong as regular expresions for text matching. I suppose it is probably
pretty easy do do something even as simple as take all the white space out of the beggining of
certain lines of a file. I less than 5 seconds, I can do this:
:%s/^ *//g
This is just an example. Tell me how you can even think of doing that in windows -- or even if I
can, why I would want to.
Anyway, my point is that there are some things that were just done right a long time ago. Wine (the
drink) is that way. VI is that way. UNIX is that way. They are all getting improvements -- for
the better. Windows seems to have taken a step in the opposite direction. I used to keep my DOS
box running for months at a time doing computations. I just read a study the other day that says
people have to reboot their windows systems 9 times a week. By insulting my editor, you insult my
whole POSIX operating system.
:) Many of great code was and is created in VI and Emacs. These are the editors of the scientific
community.
