Hi Joe "VIM" Stump et al-
I had an account on one server that did not have VIM, it had VI and this
server was "under the sun" - on FreeBSD. Perhaps they uninstalled it but
there are sysadmins that do not enjoy VIM and prefer VI as it is not
"bloated" Now, I prefer vim but anyway, curious if anyone knows how
standard vim is as compared to vi.
Regarding the win32 distro, I too once lookeed for it and finally found
one but it was older and did not work properly for me. The vim mirror
system is not friendly to the windows user, this is true, am glad someone
else noticed this :-) But, as per Joe words, doing a search for "cygwin
vim" on google provides a host of available downloads - very nice.
I develop on both win/nix as I just really love my homesite settings and
can't get rid of it. If you use homesite, spend 8 or so hours
configuring/feeling it, you will save this time in future development time
in about a week and then be happy from then on. Don't settle on your
settings! Btw, I like my mouse - my wrists hurt so taking a break with
mouse I like, I love my mouse! :P Every argument has a rebuttel though,
as I write these words I forsee so many potential arguments that it's
sickening - oh well. Click. (btw, will homesite run nicely under wine?)
Agreed, the search (and replace) features of vi(m) really come in handy
and it just feels good, as well as other features (vertical block select).
It depends on the user, vi is not for everyone either is windows or peanut
butter for that matter. But, spending one hour on something and giving up
is not the answer especially considering the amount of time one spends
developing. This "down time" is painful to bear though it seems, too bad.
So point is, be yourself - choosing your editor is vital so test/read them
all and spend time doing so and the more you know the happier you'll be -
everything has its place, strengths and weaknesses. As you learn continue
to test and don't fear change. Easier said then done. Phew.
