Thanks to everyone who's added to this thread, I've read all your comments
and tried to digest them. When I made the initial posting I ddin't realise
how much varied response I'd get....anyone care to sum up? :-)
A lot of the arguements put forward seem to boil down to pro or anti
Microsoft. Personally I'm not bothered, I just want to get the job done as
best as possible. From reading the responses I'm guessing that in actual
development there's not a lot to choose between the 2, like any comparison
between 2 languages each will have its good points and bad points. PHP seems
to have the edge in access and development speed (at least on small to mid
sized sites and DB's), whereas ASP seems to be the choice for large site
developments (although this could be put down to large company mentality).
I guess the thing that may win through is the streamlining of development on
both UNIX and NT servers, for this to happen the PHP route seems to win
hands down (I'm quite happy to be proved wrong by ASP or something else).
Maybe I should now be asking the question PHP Vs perl ??? or PHP Vs
ModPerl??
Coming at this from a different angle, can anyone give me some good concrete
reasons why we should be changing to PHP from whatever we're developing in
at the moment?
Thanks again for all you responses.
