I think your bottom line is quite off track. ASP is hardly any more suitable for large scale web sites than PHP is. There are *lots* of large companies, as well as large web sites, that use PHP (AltaVista and Amazon to name a couple), and I'd imagine they've made their choice after evaluating the alternatives.
