I'll have to synch up with the Live User semantics at some point. The Enterprise A&A system is pretty flexible. There is the concept of a provider (i.e. any backend used for A&A such as SQL DB's or LDAP) and they can be added on the fly. Apps have a choice of using an existing provider or implementing their own...it's up to them. However, the power of the system is leveraging single credential sets (i.e. use of as few providers as possible). I'm not sure how 'container' is meant in Live User.
