Yes, templates work recursively. There is also another orgizational object
called a "CodePlate" which is a template that has modules pre-loaded into
it's areas. CodePlates are also recursive - ie, you can have a root template,
with three areas: one area has a code module, one area has a template,
another has a codePlate. Both the template and the codePlate could have other
modules or templates inside them.

Not quite sure what you mean here, but SiteManager includes a framework for
integrating database connectivity into code modules. Therefor a database
connection defined for the site (through the XML configuration system) is
available to all modules. Database abstraction is handled through the PEAR DB
classes.
There is also a module we've built that examines a database structure and
builds a SmartForm on the fly to create and edit data. (SmartForms are
SiteManager's way of programatically defining input forms. Lots of features,
check the website.)

There's actually a lot more to it than I've described, I think it best to go
to the website, as we've got a bunch of good information there, including a
Flash demo describing how the template/module system works.

Just to be clear, though, SiteManager isn't a Content Management System as
such, it's really a framework or library with which to build such systems (or
any web application).
