At the moment I don't know how to establish a smooth
migration path, but I think we shouldn't forget those
mass hosters out there who won't upgrade to PHP5 very
quickly.
How about providing two "PEARs"? One repository/web site
area for PHP4 compatible PEAR, one for the next generation
PHP5?
