Not only mass hosters will IMO stick to PHP 4 for some time:
I can think of a lot of mid-size projects which highly rely
on PHP 4's behaviour and which will not survive a switch to
PHP 5 - so there will be also some small providers etc. that
will not switch to PHP 5 soon, simply because they don't have
the time to change their applications (which is basically a
good sign for the companies order situation :-)).
Currently I see the following future for PHP 4/5:
A lot of providers will run two different server setups in
the future: Their existing projects will run on PHP 4 installations
and the new projects will be developed on PHP 5 perhaps together
with Apache 2.
So we can IMHO expect a lot of remaining installations of PHP 4
in the future, which can't be neglected by PEAR.

I suggest (as I wrote in my previous mail) to keep the existing
code compatible to PHP 4. I don't care very much if _new_ packages
are only compatible to PHP 5.
