When upgrading your PEAR installation, you're interested in updating every package you have installed with the newest release with the same state, right? If you are running a "beta" DB, a plain "pear-get upgrade" command will update DB to a newer beta version. You can't do the same thing with dependencies (what if a package actually works with both PHP 4 and PHP 5, then you won't be able to get this info even if we put all the dependencies in the database). - Stig
