hehehe. well put. he will be soon, he had a beautiful little kid a while
ago. :) course I can't claim crap, I'm 22. I have no kids... but I like
them!
anyway: I agree with manuel that it is best for those undertaking decisions
about the "core" of metabase/MDB to have experience with many DBMSs from
converting drivers. I think it's an important point, because people make
assumptions that are wrong without having been through all the crap.
The _reason_ metabase is so completely solid I think is directly related to
the breadth of manuel's experience with DMBS systems. He makes no
assumptions because he knows already.
However, I do believe that the code - if carefully "converted" to MDB -
would benefit from a second look and application of standard formatting. Not
only because the code will become open and self documenting, but also
because it will allow the "converting" developer to make updates to the code
which are significant in light of PHP4 and especially ZE2.
In binarycloud, we have already begun to consider ZE2 and are actually in
the process of changing our Error system to an exception system, and...
uh... ditching the fairly bloated PEAR overhead for every page render in the
process.
Manuel I think is a bit angry about his treatment by PEAR, and I'm sure that
is in some ways justified though I am not close to the issue.
What I do know - regardless of what you think of Manuel (I like him,
stubborn as he is) - he knows his shit backwards, forwards, and upside-down.
He's been there, done that. Worth a listen at least.
In any case, I see MDB's future as a bright one, and Lukas et al - you have
our (binarycloud's) full support. In fact I think it is the most significant
project begun under the auspices of PEAR. As soon as we think the system is
ready, we'll switch. And you'll find I'm sure that after the switch takes
place, you'll get a lot of contributions from binarycloud people using the
system in production.
And, on that note - we're close to (ha ha re: recent talk of version
numbers): "binarycloud r2 RC1" which will be our first r2 LGPL release.
best,
