Hi Lukas,
I agree with Manuel here :-). You have to read and test different database
api's to get a taste of how to do things correctly. What appears intuitive
to implement sometimes works only with just one database. The most
problematic database driver as far as i can recall for adodb was Oracle
because oci8 just works differently from everyone else. The most
frustrating was Interbase because it is not documented well.
If i may suggest, the key drivers that you need to review (perhaps read
their php api's, or review the current metabase/adodb/pear-db
impementations, if you don't want to develop the drivers yourself) and
ensure you have enough experience in developing solutions for a wide range
of databases are:
a. oracle (very different)
b. mssql (what you learn applies to sybase fortunately)
c. odbc (to support access and db2)
d. mysql and postgresql (which have been done!)
There are lots of other databases, but these cover the most important i
think.
