Which is just a real shame because AFAIK Smarty is the best PHP only templating solution because it is based in smart meta-programming concepts that overcome performance limitations of the tradicional template packages.
Smarty is one the best PHP only templating solution with meta-programming. Not the best templates solution, or not a template solution for what I consider as template, no 'intelligence' inside them.
That is certainly your opinion and not everybody agrees. The problem of PEAR philosofy is that only one solution is right, and often the criteria is not objective, but rather something related with the personal preferences of those that decided which solution is right. Since those that decide are minority that only represent their own interests, that will not please many people, so PEAR ends up being an elitist development, which is pretty much against the spirit of CPAN which was the original inspiration of PEAR.
How many more great packages and great developers do you want to keep our from contributing to PEAR?
Do you follow this list ? let count them.
I follow this list with more attention than you can imagine. I lost count of the people that have been turned down and I promptly suggested to contribute their work to the PHP Classes site. At least there they won't be rejected and have plenty of recognition and feedback because every new class that is posted there is not announced to about 50,000 subscribers that are eager to know about new classes. If you ever go there and notice that some classes were actually proposed to PEAR before, then you may realize that it may have been because I suggested their authors to contributed to a site where they are much more welcomed than in PEAR.
I have long time planned to provide a self installing package format for PHP Classes. It doesn't seem that PEAR tgz based format is good enough. I am more inclined to adopt RPM because it is a world standard for packaging software. This will still be subject of further study. I would have yet to see PEAR tgz based format evolve up to the capabilities of RPM to consider adopting it.
afaik there are plans to extends pear package features, better deps support by example. I like rpm too, except they are not really cross platform, the pear installer running on the top of php is cross-platform.
I think you are confusing the RPM format with RPM program. I do not see why the RPM format can't be used as a cross platform packaging format. Sure you will not find the RPM program as a standard under Windows, so you won't find tar or gzip for that platform either. Just like you wrote a tar replacement in PHP you can write a RPM replacement in PHP, or better adapt RPM original program to PEAR needs and ship it with PHP. -- Regards, Manuel Lemos
