Sorry Tobi, sorry Lucas to say so but:
I strongly believe that having a "PEAR2" will not change anything.
It's possible to make many packages work with PHP5 also (it just
needs a bit more testing). And for the serious cases where you might
have problems to use all functions of your class with PHP5 there area
also ways to solve these issues - technical ways.
In my eyes what we need are good decisions by the community / PEAR
group and having everybody support / follow these decisions. E.g. if
you have a look at the installer-proposals Greg made some while ago
... if these make it into the core then we would have versioning-
support with multiple trees (each major version can coexist etc.).
It's not that I want to start off this discussion right now - but
make clear that its even possible to do the same things people like
Toby and Lucas intend with the current architecture and with the
skills that community programmers contribute.
I would really appreciate if we could stop talking about branching
off a new PEAR2 (or whatever it might be called) and invest the time
needed for those discussions into finding ways to improve our current
architecture. Many proposals have already been made (Greg, I think
you know which one's I'm talking about :-))) - so maybe we should dig
them up again and bring them into real life?
Think wise / twice ...
Stefan
