Being able to have multiple major versions beside each other and
having the ability to check for PHP 4 / PHP 5 by using dependencies
in package.xml solves every "problem" you mentioned in your post
afaik. So where's the "big deal" this includes? Okay, we would need
to start over the "multiple major versions"-discussion again ...
which I think is damn necessary anyway!
