Quoting Klaus Guenther <klaus@capitalfocus.org>:
I don't think this kind of preanouncement business ("Hord said they would release everything"...). Yeah right.... and you wonder why I haven't taken the time to put together proposals for the 60+ packages in Horde. What on earth would I get out of it? You'd claim that the code would get more eyes, etc., but I see no evidence of that. All I've tried to point out is, when there are people proposing baby new packages that we have mature code for, that maybe it'd make more sense to take that energy going into the new code and instead use it to clean up and extend mature, production code that could live happily in PEAR with just a bit of work. But that'd be NIH, and that's not the pear way - competing packages (is anyone here really motivated by trying to "beat" someone who's just duplicating your work?) and writing everything from scratch is the pear way.
On the other hand, Horde has a lot of pretty stable code. And it would be a shame to tell them we aren't interested. But this is what I've essentially been told time and time again. I think I'm going to just give up every once in a while, but the duplication seems so damn stupid that I'm still here. My fault.
The handicap that Horde code brings with it is that it's being used in production and actively distributed, so it would be kinda difficult to completely rewrite the API.Some people might not consider mature code a handicap, but, *shrug*
Maybe if we start accepting competitive packages, the people over at Horde will step up their efforts to have their packages included in PEAR :-) Until then, they already have their own package server. And it's linked to on pearweb, so why should they really complain? ;-)Beats the heck out of me. If I had it to do over again, I would never have contributed Log and Mail to PEAR, and I would have just forked off versions of DB and everything else that we use, and not gotten entangled in this mess. We'd have a much tighter framework, probably faster, and much easier to install, as a result. -chuck -- "Regard my poor demoralized mule!" - Juan Valdez
