Hi Josh, Joe, I dunno what's the exactly Pierre's or the persons in release process also PHP QA reason why PEAR should be out from PHP releases. But I read that it's to make PEAR completely independent, I have no idea whether PEAR wanna be independent or not. Now, we must ask this question: Should PEAR become independent or not? If not, we must put the installer back in to PHP releases, If yes, IMHO there's no problem if the installer out from the PHP releases. I can't really say if PEAR should become independent, but I don't really think this decision has much to do about that.
It seems to me that the problems are: Keeping PEAR releases in sync is a lot of work (I'm not actually sure how its more work then just regular releases, but I do know that not driving your own timeline sucks) Some PHP devs don't like having PEAR around (though they sure like to use it to install PECL stuff) Anyhow my concern are that this doesn't cause PEAR to lose momentum, so if the installer isn't going to be shipped with PHP (I have no problem dropping to just that if it makes things easier) then we need to work on our installation instructions. Actually it might be worth working on them either way, the front page of pear.php.net doesn't even have a link of how to install the pear manager, and if your looking in the manual its a couple levels deep. It might also be nice to have a mention in the normal php manual, even if thats mainly from a needing to use it with pecl perspective. -josh
