Lets just say that Pierre (and to some extend I) have been working an up hill battle inside internals to get PEAR the standing it has now. Removing the bundle was on the list for alot of internals people for quite some time now, after we first worked so hard to get it in.
Read the last post by Andi and you will know this did not come out of the blue. But its obvious to me that an installer is an important piece in the entire PHP stack and PHP6 is still miles off.
I guess it did not come out of the blue. Just to clarify, in your last sentence
do you mean you think a pear installer should be bundled with php (in the
future that is) ?
