The only completely honest person in this thread is Lukas, who said "I don't want exceptions, because they'll force me to change my development habits a bit". So a real question is whether several people not wanting to change their development habits is a good enough reason for stalling the whole PEAR project.
pear as the official php library? should never force a user to change his habits. Obviously there are still thousands of php 4 installations running in production. These developers are used to work without caring about exceptions.
These developers are also used to work without caring about public / protected / private attributes and methods. Should therefore all PHP5 classes in PEAR have all their methods and attributes public? I don't really care about "developers" unable to learn new concepts. I think PHP community will be a better place if all this "developers" chose some other occupation: janitorial, for example.
I suggest we should really think about a kind of proxy lukas suggested in this first post. This proxy should have an abstract interface, so people are able to use any error return concept they want to use.
Have you read about the problems with this proxy? Have you *understood* the things that were said?
The use of this proxy should be the only thing developers are forced to in pear. Of course it will add some more microseconds to run time but then everybode will be happy with pear. The only question I see is what default error handler/concept should be used with this proxy. Here I am +1 for using an 'exception based driver'. So.. one more message for the next flamewars ;-)
