It was one of those ideas that come to you in the heat of the thread. Clearly the idea has been proposed and discussed in the past -- I appreciate your response in explaining why it won't work. Backward compatibility sucks. Maybe it is time for maintainers to just draw a line in the sand, and it may be that the PEAR group needs to draw that line FOR developers, so that when users of a certain package complain, they can point to PEAR, who will have posted a very rational and reasonble reason for drawing said line.It does suck, however with the amount of packages and users we have, we cannot simply stop doing it as it, it's immoral and simply bad..
It seems clear from this thread that PHP4 has crossed the line called legacy, and even though a large number of ISP and hosting providers continue to offer PHP4 only, maybe The PEAR Group needs to nudge them and their users to avocate moving to PHP5 ASAP.Indeed :) Should be top priority for the ones elected.
