How does Postgres compare to MySQL? I've been using MySQL for quite
some time on sites with millions of hits a day without performance
problems (the big upshot to MySQL is that select queries are very fast,
the big downside is that insert and update queries are sometimes
unstable, so you code for as few writes as possible).
I've been telling people for 4+ years that it's the way to go - you can
toss up 10 reasonable Linux servers and a load balancer for half the
price you'd pay to deploy a couple comparable Windows servers. Serving
dynamic web sites doesn't take a GUI and it's better to have many small,
fast servers than one huge server... I've long advocated one very large
box with a high-performance commercial database (DB2 or Oracle) and a
large number of cheap Linux boxes in front of it processing page
requests behind a common firewall and a load balancer. The sky is the
limit with a setup like that, it's really cheap, and best of all - it's
redundant.
