I never used it on milion-hits-per-day applications but, as long as I can see,
PostgreSQL is NOT significantly slower than MySQL, neither in read nor in
write operations. In all of my applications, the real bottleneck was PHP and,
much more important, the network bandwith.
Regarding the system stability, I cannot remember any significant problem
neither with PostgreSQL nor with MySQL (while I can remember a few, even
serious, problems with M$ SQL Server and, much more, with M$ Jet).
IMHO, PosgtreSQL is so much richer of useful features (server-side scripting
languages like PL/SQL and Python, rules, functions, transactions, PGAccess
and so on) than MySQL that it is hard to understand why so much people still
do not use it, in particular if you consider that PostgreSQL is BSD-licensed
(absolutely _no limits_!).
PS: I never used PostgreSQL on Windows, though.
My 2 Euro cents.
