There is still a difference and that is the (possible) loading of the compiling engine. From what I have gleaned from the lists (correct me if I'm wrong), the compiler is still included if there is no compiling.
You're wrong, forgive my bluntness :). I would recommend that all people calling for a holy war actually check out the code Alan committed to Flexy. I think it is pretty close to Savant plus extra stuff. The big deal now is that the extra stuff is installed even if you never use it, which is more a problem of the design. If Alan was willing to deprecate Flexy, then Flexy could be split into the main package Template (Savant) with Paul's lead and Alan as co-lead, and the subpackage Template_Flexy with Alan's lead. This is what I would like to see. Template.php class Template Template/Flexy.php class Template_Flexy extends Template Then, others could be created. Stephan offered to create a Template_PAT to do what patTemplate does, and I'm sure even a Template_Smarty is possible although I would never, ever want to be the one to write it :) It would also mean that plugins for Savant-style templates could be in Template/Plugins/, for Flexy-specific stuff in Template/Flexy/Plugins, and so on.
