Hi Greg,

Anyway, I think you're 100% right about the political & technical improvements that will bring to PHP package distribution. Everyone is fighting for their share of the PEAR real estate now since there's no good alternative. It'll be great to have it be less of a prize to have a package accepted to PEAR. On the other hand, my younger brother who's been building a pet PHP groupware project for a long time asked "What's PEAR?" when I mentioned tonight that he might want to look there for some Mime parsing classes. I just sort of stared at him .... "the *official* PHP repository...". Wow... :) Hanssomewhere else. It seems to me more & more that PEAR really wants to be cohesive, and in that case I think there needs to be more control, not less. People are welcome to create their own more open repositories for PHP code if they don't like PEAR policies.Side note - channels are designed precisely to solve this political issue as well as technical issues. By allowing the installer to easily install other packages, it gives a legitimacy that is not afforded currently. It is my hope that this will force the quality of PEAR to be higher, and still afford plenty of other sites for users to choose quality code from, as well as healthy alphaworks-style sites for rapid development and experimentation, which is also good for PHP and very important.
