The maintainer has his reasons. __autoload() from his point of view is bad voodoo very much like the infamous "magic quotes". It also shouldn't be probably triggered by using is_a() function which is deprecated (!) in PHP5. So if someone is bent on using __autoload() Black Magick he should take necessary precautions. Like only __autoload() his own classes and not touch PEAR's *at all* (none of them requires __autoload()!). If someone is too lazy to properly code his functions and understand the consequences, I have *no* sympathy for them.__autoload() is getting more and more uses these days in the PHP world. it would be great if PEAR could find a way to embrace it in some form or another (or come up with an implementation for PHP itself that makes sense). not having to require the code needed to instantiate an object is very useful in situations where you want all the convinience of a framework but have very "small" requests (like in AJAX applications) where usually you dont need all the power, but its not easily determined what power you actually do need without tediously doing the same requires all over the place. Its also useful in some distributed applications that make heavy use of external programming environments etc. So while there are certainly major annoyances in the current implementation, there is alot of potential in the general idea. regards, Lukas
