Well you are going on about this but forget there are different
applications out there. When I met Sterling at the php conference in
frankfurt he was employed at a company that does searchengines
(fasttrack iirc). Obviously these guys don't switch DB's often and
obviously their bottleneck will be the dabatbase.
If you this might be different. I will even claim that most php
developers don't even ever examine their bottlenecks nor are they ever
forced to.
Db abstraction is also more than hiding the differences in the way
different RDBMS store data or in emulating missing features. I think
first and foremost its about using the same API for all my applications.
This is particularly true for php as there is soo few consistency among
the different native DB API's.
