Well you can either:
1) start and stop a timer in various parts of your script and then
output the results
2) you could throw some web benchmark proggi at the application and
change parts here and there (or uncomment parts) looking how that
affects the number of pages served
3) the best is to use something like DBG (http://dd.cron.ru/dbg/ - the
site is down ATM). DBG has a profiler that neatly shows you where your
php script spends its time. Unfortunately I think most of the editors
out there that support DBG is still integrating the newest version (that
brought with it the profiler)
