I assume the frontend for the admin panel can be replaced easily?
One suggestion:
It really upsets me when I see people including xml conf files in PHP
apps.
You simply cannot do this in a stateless environment!
Anyways since its already there please cache the parsed xml data
structure.

Please everybody that designs PHP applications:
First: Write the app with an array structure for the conf parameters
Then: Write the code to generate the array structure from an XML file
1) This way you will speed up development because writing an array
structure is much easier than having to first work with an XML
structure.
2) You get way better performance
3) When you are done with it all you also have the XML advantage without
much added development time really.
