I fail to see why you guys don't consider prompt links to tutorials as an equivalent (if not a better) solution to reducing the list traffic, and making things easier on new users. Do you think the user cares whether it says www.php.net or www.weberdev.com on the URL bar? It's completely transparent. Why bother about something that many others are already bothering with?
Again, it's not that there should be a mandatory 'NO TUTORIALS HERE' rule for the manual, but as a general rule, it should be what it is now and what it excels in. I don't see any point in duplicating efforts others are doing, for no reason at all (other than some sort of baseless pride that 'we can do things better', that every single person has when he goes about doing something that was already done).

The more examples we can put into the documentation, the better, and if somebody wants to write some full tutorials, I see no reason for not including them as long as they don't get in the way. That is, they would be put into the appendix or into a separate chapter so as to not interfere with the concise function reference.I see no reason to step into something that's already covered by so many other sites. Link them. Keep the manual elite in what it is. This whole business sounds as if we're competing with other sites, when we really aren't. What does it matter whether it's it on php.net or on another site?if we can make php.net better - let's do it! there is no reason not to put up stuff simply because other people have some of that stuff on their site.we already do link a lot of those sites and i have no problem linking even more -but- if we can reduce the traffic on any of our lists, or flattern the php learning curve even more by giving more sample code and tutorials to people (don't forget: www.php.net _is_ the 1st site ppls do surf to) than i see _no_ reason whatsoever not to do so!so - if one of the teams (QA/DOC/..) want's to put up tutorials and/or sample code they should be welcome to do so!tcZeev -- Zeev Suraski <zeev@zend.com> http://www.zend.com/ -- PHP Development Mailing List <http://www.php.net/> To unsubscribe, e-mail: php-dev-unsubscribe@lists.php.net For additional commands, e-mail: php-dev-help@lists.php.net To contact the list administrators, e-mail: php-list-admin@lists.php.net --Thies C.
