There is nothing in your reply that would convince anyone to use PHP over
anything else. The question is "Why PHP?"
You say that ASP is limited. Fine. HOW is it limited? In what ways
specifically? What does ASP not do that PHP or some other scripting
language can? You mention that ASP has performance and stability issues,
and that's difficult to accuse a language of, as I'm sure you're well aware.
Most often those issues are a result of poor coding. However, that's not to
say that your assertion is wrong, it's just not backed by any evidence.
Where are the numbers to prove stability issues, and where are some specific
examples showing the "limitations" of ASP and how PHP overcomes them. That
would be valuable.
Paying for support is an interesting argument; however, I think you miss the
fact that there are tons of free support sites, news groups, and email lists
for ASP, just as there are for PHP. The monetary downfall of ASP resides
more with the outrageous up-front and ongoing costs of the platform than
with support.
I hope I'm not being too harsh, but I think the question is a really good
one, and I would like some legitimate responses with specific and detailed
examples. Opinion is a fine thing, but when trying to make a business case
for using a programming language and/or environment, specifics are needed.
The stance of management folks is almost always that "we'll go with
Microsoft, unless you can convince us otherwise." So from the beginning
it's a battle. I would really like some good ammunition, and not just more
opinions and anecdotes.

Why would you want to use such a platform limited language like asp?
especially considering it's performace, stability, and capabilities less
than php. microsoft repeatedly reinvents a poorer version of the wheel. it's
the politics that surround the tech biz that always give MS an edge.
Besides... who wants to pay for support for ASP? =) JSP is good from what
I've seen, though it still has some growing up to do. Don't waste your time
with VB scripting, unless you wanna do some asp, which is unadvised. all of
the languages work well, thats not the question at hand. but php seems to be
best bet right now. you didn't mention anything about python, now that could
be something that might take off in a big way. python is extremely clean,
stable, super fast, concise, highly portable and is the textbook example of
modulization/object oriented programming. unfortunately i haven't dove into
it much yet, but i'm pretty impressed so far. of course i'd still code php
over python, but it is something to look at and get your own opinion of. the
other languages you mentioned i would stick away from. but you are asking
this question in a php list, so you're not gonna get a real unbiased opinion
=). i know the MS lackies in the asp lists probably talk a lot of smack
about php. tell them to go to hotscriptscom and they can see that maybe
there's a lot more people that know php is superior in many ways. there's a
handful of asp stuff there (basically everything on the web you can find).
but for php there's a few thousand handfuls of code, tutorials, reference,
etc. if someone could ever show me some real life reasons where another
language is better, i'd be the first to switch. but i think with thousands
of minds focusing on developing a kick ass language it will be hard to
out-class php any time soon.
