| For example, I got pdflib for 'free' this summer. It took

By this token, you love Tomcat/JSP do you?
;-)
Also, apparently you are frustrated because of setting up something taking
time. MOST technologies these days need some time to install/configure, even
JAVA and its sad classpath issues. Lets look beyond the initial cost,
whether directly monetary or the time you spend in figuring out something.
Most spoon-feeding technologies have limitations because something has been
sacrificed in making them simple. Secondly, and more importantly, they have
a recurring cost. When you buy something expensive, everything ancillary you
buy to it (including support for the original product) costs a song.
Of course people decide what sort of cost they wish to save. Initial
learning time, or the recurring costs of "sophistication".
