Quick anecdotal data....
When conceiving my first major e-commerce programming job, I actually did
consider ASP for a while and decided against it for the following reasons:
1. My server had PHP3 on it. Going to a WIN/ASP server would have cost me
a little mroe each month.
2. Docs/tutorials. I'm not a tech-head which means that 90% of
Microsoft's knowledge base is gibberish to me. However everything I've
seen regarding PHP from their own site docs to DevShed.com has been
completely within my grasp.
3. The biggest player in my market was running a site on ASP. Their
searches were slow, regularly timing out or erroring out (and showing me
more than a little bit of source code on those erros I might add). Since
they were bought out by a big company, the performance has improved, but my
site regularly works quicker.
Now the plus I'cve seen to ASP is that newcomers who understand programming
somewhat but have never done any web site work, let alone database
integration, have been able to make simple ASP pages automatically out of
MS Access.
