No, I understand his point. He is taking his ball and going home, which is fine with me, but it causes problems for existing PEAR packages. Current PEAR packages are make heavy use of PHPUnit. Removing PHPUnit from PEAR will make life difficult for the maintainers and users of these packages.
It makes little sense to continue to maintain anything here.
Since we can't (or currently aren't allowed to) create dependencies outside of PEAR, we need to keep PHPUnit in PEAR so that at the very least current package dependencies are not broken. Obviously, we shouldn't keep code around with known bugs, so if bugs are reported, they should be fixed. I also think that it would be nice to continue to have a reliable unit testing framework in PEAR for new packages to use without relying on third party code, but how to proceed with that is possibly a topic for a different thread. -- Scott
