Hello,
On 7/6/06, Ian Warner <iwarner@triangle-solutions.com> wrote:
I raised this up in the General, being new to PEAR but keen to help, because we are now making extensive use of the packages. I asked what was PEAR's roadmap, what is the PEAR group doing to stay ahead. This job is only for the PEAR Group. It is even mainly the role of the PEAR developers to do it.
I didn't think that PEAR was that attractive for new developers, and that most would now go for things like the Zend framework.Let talk about all these new comers in 3 years, ok? They all have pros and cons, this fact is true for pear as well.
I read today the Horde homepage and then the PEAR one there was remarkable differences in the tone and content of the opening spiel.I do not understand this paragraph.
I got shot down though for asking these questions,You firt asked pear-general, you got some nice answers and some other not really nice. I hate to see the later, especially when it comes always from the same people.
but they seem more valid to me now, I don't want to put my company in a position where we are using PEAR and then the whole thing crumbles,Read below, people are making a mountain of a non event. PHPUnit is *one* package, PEAR has hundred of packages. PHPUnit is not used at all at runtime but only for tests and not for all packages. Any pear package can still use it or choose one of the numerous alternatives. What I would suggest is to come with concrete questions or points you like to change or bring. Asking if Project Foo is going to kill the project Bar is not going to bring us anywhere. Also consider to use pear-dev for anything related to the pear project in general. You should also understand how things change in many opensource projects, naturally and in a pragmatic way. Forcing changes never succeeded.
this is a overstatement definitely, but some literature on where PEAR is going will not only help developers, but users alike. Can we keep things as a realistic level? What does that have to do with PHPUnit leaving PEAR? PHPUnit is a huge project, with its own needs and goals. The constraints in PEAR do not fit anymore for the PHPUnit developement. It makes perfectly sense to move it out of pear and create a dedicated project. Cheers, --Pierre
