Since there seems to be some confussion on what am I proposing, I'll try to clear it up: The proposed name for the package is OLE. The proposed category is Structures (Windows being an alternative). The purpose of the package is to enable writing OLE containers without the need for any Windows API. OLE stands for Object Linking and Embedding, meaning an OLE file can contain several (or just one) Office document files (which can link each other or be embedded within each other). OLE replaces an older format, known as DDE, which didn't allow compounding of files among several other limitations (like file size). Container and document format are handled separately by Office applications. Excel 2000 can read an Excel 5 file within an OLE file, just as well as an Excel 2000 file within a DDE file. What could you gain from this package? -The ability to write Office documents without worrying about DDE's limitations. -Eventually (when I extend it), the ability to read most Office documents created from circa 1995 to the present day (KM applications?). Source code and docs are here: http://www.dcc.uchile.cl/~xnoguer/OLE/ The package is here: http://www.dcc.uchile.cl/~xnoguer/OLE/OLE-0.1.tgz The Spreadsheet_Excel_Writer package to test it is here: http://www.dcc.uchile.cl/~xnoguer/OLE/Spreadsheet_Excel_Writer-0.3.tgz Xavier PS: The previous version of the package I posted had a bug on Solaris and maybe other systems. The current one has been fixed.
