The php online manual is ok, it's certainly well organized.
However:
When you're starting out, the questions are usually metaquestions, because you don't know yet what tools are available, or which approaches are easy, and which are difficult. The manual isn't going to help you with those.
Assuming you know what you want to do, but not how, you go to the online manual and play "guess the function category", and the result (once you find the right category), in my experience, is a very terse description of a function, but usually no idea of how the output is formatted.
Apparently, everyone should make up test pages for every function?
Thank god for the user annotations.
Searching the archives is an exercise in frustration..
First, nobody trims off the off-topic discussions and flamewars, so you end up retrieving all that.
Second, the interface is very slow, so it takes a LOT of time to find anything useful.
Third, it's very annoying to go through all this, and find some thread in german. I'm sure it helps the germans a lot, but it does me no good.. (I'm sure they feel the same way reciprocally)
Fourth, when you find something on-topic, when you eventually get the article, it's often just someone else asking how to do X.
IOW: the archives I have seen, are low S/N and slow to retrieve, making them much less useful than they could be.
This is my own experience, YMMV. (frankly, I hope so)
I like PHP, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. But..
So, ask away newbies, We are all someone else's "newbie". I'll answer what I can.
So, can anyone tell me how to upgrade my PHP from 4.0B3 to current on an out-of-the-box RH6.1 system?
Specifically, must I recompile apache, and if so, what options should I enable (Can't find them in the RH docs.)
My site is up and running, but I'm still a newbie at installation and upgrade..
