You're forgetting here that PEAR is not just a committee (in fact I
rarely if ever see it as such), it's a community. Most of us think of
PEAR as "ours" in some sense and we like to know what's happening with
it. PHPClasses or hotscripts is a different matter. Those are just
collection places for anything. PEAR is a group of people working
toward an ideal and each person becomes a part of that as they join.
Just because we don't have a trademark doesn't mean that we should be
left out of any decisions / news. A quick e-mail to the PEAR group or
PEAR-dev list about this article would have not only been prudent but
the right thing to do. Simply the fact that we're having this
discussion is proof of that. *We* (and by we I mean the community of
developers that is PEAR) feel slighted here not to have been included.
A quick note from Chuck would even have been enough.
I would also like to say that while it is true that each package has
its own maintainers and that those maintainers have nearly complete
autonomy, There is still the PEAR-QA group and the entire group of
PEAR developers to answer to. If one of us sees something in another
package which can be better or is failing to meet standards we say so.
In addition, if a package is left unmaintained we have a duty to deal
with it. Usually this means that someone (in the QA group if no one
else) deals with any major bugs and such. This, also, makes us more of
a community, unlike phpclasses or hotscripts.
