The Zend engine is not component ware, in the same sense as EJB or COM. It's a component only in the sense it's independent from PHP, self-sustained and reusable in other frameworks. Mind you, it's a big set of functions that doesn't use a single object.
That said, you're comparing two completely different worlds that have nothing to do with each other. You can't learn much, if anything, from the design of an application such as PHP, about the design of a PHP-driven Web site.
