You cannot reuse foreign code at all once that code is compiled
and bytecode protected, unless this code has been specifically
packaged for reuse. This does not currently matter, though, as
there is at the moment no such thing as compiled PHP without
source access or encrypted bytecode.
Take "foreign" as foreign to you (the programmer) but not foreign at all (in a company). non-OO code is very hard to convert, modify, maintain, partially (re)use and so on, that´s my experience, I´ve done a few time so far
I don´t know what zeev imagines, but you´re right that componentware and closed source projects (with noticed problems) will arise at a (high) rate this fall (when compiler is released) - and that isn´t as bad.
