I'm afraid no.
You either have control stuctures in the templates, like Smarty does,
or in the PHP-code, like IT[X]. The former is more flexible while the
latter is easier to understand for the person editing the templates,
because there isn't much to understand.
Both systems have there advantages and drawbacks, and until sombody
comes up with a way to combine their advantages PEAR should support
both. They are both called templates but they have systematically
different appraoches and to some degree different purposes.
It would be nice to have compilation and some nice stuff like modifiers
in IT[X], though.
If Smarty moves into PEAR, IMHO it would be ideal if Smarty and IT[X]
shared a part of their codebase, with IT[X] using Smarty's compiler or
something, if that's possible and there's somebody who has the time to
do it.
