I think that many templates would make things harder, PEAR does not have
many developers and having 2 templating engines would need more effort to
maintain. As for which is the best template engine I think smarty is
superior to any other engine I've worked with, it might have problems with
it's size but this could be solved by dividing it into parts (it's already
broken into a couple of classes), for the really performance wary just use
caching.
