I've been quiet so far on this - I feel as strongly as Cynic about it all,
but I was hoping that I would be able to come up with the inspirational leap
which would keep everyone happy and solve the problem. Sadly, I haven't
managed to do that yet, so I'll just think aloud for a minute.
There is discussion about treating 'core' and 'extension' functions
differently. Maybe this is ok, but most users probably don't know, or care,
if strlen is a core function or is provided by a string extension module.
How about this. If a function does the same as a standard C function, then
it has the same name, and the same order for the arguments. If the function
is obviously in an extension library (eg mysql_blah) then there is a prefix
of the library name and possibly/probably an underscore. If it falls into
some other category than someone else can work out what to do with it ;-)
I'm all for less typing myself and I'd rather see underscores disappear
rather than be added all over the place, but I'm happy to go with the flow
as long as consistency wins. One advantage of losing underscores is that the
standard C functions don't have them, and neither would we.
Cheers
