Why are you so bitter about this?
If PEAR succeeds in stealing all the traffic from the other PHP
repositories (something I doubt very much will happen), I think
it will be because of it's qualities and the quality and quantity
of code it offers, not because of some insidious plan on Stig's part.
I want to add that given the rate at with PHP seems to be growing
I'm betting there will be room for more code repositories. Look
at the number of Perl tutorial/code/example sites out there. CPAN
certainly didn't kill them off.
