Perhaps I am missing something here, but couldn't you still have patched
PHP? I know I have many times, without any ill effects. I *think* that's
what open source is all about. The whole point is when you are
'discriminated' against you can still go ahead with your project. No one is
holding you hostage and no one is making you write shell scripts because
they don't like your patch.
For someone with so many bad experiences with PHP, you certainly are a
prolific poster. They must be doing something right.
