Hello Cary, On 03-Mar-00 03:18:26, you wrote: >> So, you decide it is best to scrap everybody else's effort doing your own >> instead of reusing each other's efforts. Never mind. By doing their own instead of reusing what exists, of course. >Why are you so bitter about this? To tell you the truth this is a long story. Unless you really want to know, let me just tell you that I have been discriminated by Rasmus in the past several times when with the best of my intentions I was trying to contribute with C code for PHP to implement a desired feature (listed in the bug report/feature request database several times). Discrimination had nothing to do with tecnical conformance issues. It was pure lack of respect. There were situations on which I was clearly discriminated, but that upsets me too much to remind them. :-( All I want is that if they are going to build a repository where supposedly everybody may contribute, there won't be any chance for discrimination. Once burned, twice shy. >If PEAR succeeds in stealing all the traffic from the other PHP >repositories (something I doubt very much will happen), I think >it will be because of it's qualities and the quality and quantity >of code it offers, not because of some insidious plan on Stig's part. I don't care about PEAR stealing traffic of my site or other sites. But now that you have mentioned it, some time ago I called I put a call for people that have sites of valuable PHP content and I explicitly called people from the core developers in a message sent to the PHP public mailing lists. Several content site providers shown, but nobody from the PHP core developers. Some of use are exchanging banners from each other sites, but not with php.net, because nobody of them shown. How do you want to foster a community if you at least don't show any will to cooperate with those that try hard and provide valuable content to the community? It seems pretty clear to me that some core developers suffer from what is described in the book "Software Engineering in C" (ISBN 3-540-97389-3) as a common pitfall called NIH syndrom - Not Invented Here, meaning if it's not our initiative or our code, it's no good. :-( >I want to add that given the rate at with PHP seems to be growing >I'm betting there will be room for more code repositories. PEAR is set to be overcontrolled by people (Rasmus) that demonstrated in the past to be unfairly biased towards individuals (myself and probably others). If you don't speak out now, later may be too late. Regards, Manuel Lemos Web Programming Components using PHP Classes.
